Ionophores in Dairy Rations
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction Ionophores have been used extensively in the beef industry in Canada since 1977. Until recently, there has been no label indication for use of ionophores in lactating dairy cattle. Ionophores are feed additives that alter rumen microbial populations through ion transfer across cell membranes. In Canada, the label warning prohibiting the use of Rumensin premix in lactating dairy cattle was removed in June 1996. Following this, a controlled release capsule containing monensin was approved for use in dairy cattle as an aid to prevent subclinical ketosis in December 1997. In 2004, both Canada and the United States received approvals for the use of monensin in lactating cow diets for improving milk production efficiency. Although other ionophores such as lasalocid and salinomycin are available for use in other cattle, only monensin is currently approved for dairy cows in North America. This paper discusses the production and health benefits of feeding or administering monensin to dairy cattle.

Alternatives to Corn for Dairy Rations
A twoto four-fold increase in corn prices in recent years over historical trends has prompted many questions about alternatives to corn for dairy rations. As corn is a low protein high energy feedstuff, its continued use even with high prices or concern over its partial replacement is mainly confined to rations for lactating cows where meeting the energy requirements of milk production is impor...
متن کاملInvestigating the Setbacks in Conventional Dairy Farms by the Follow-Up of Their Potential and Effective Milk Yields
The present study investigates the gap between the daily milk production potential and the effective milk yields in six herds. These two parameters and their changes were observed in the Gharb irrigation scheme (northwest of Morocco), during a five months study period. They were analyzed in relation to the changes in the rations of the cows and in their live weights. Results reveal that under c...
متن کاملUse of Glycerol in Dairy Rations
Increased cost of common feedstuffs and increased availability of coproducts from plant-based biofuel manufacturing has enhanced interest in the use of these coproducts in rations for dairy cattle (Donkin and Doane, 2007). Glycerol (commonly marketed as crude glycerine with a glycerol content of approximately 80%) is a coproduct produced during biodiesel production from soybean oil and is becom...
متن کاملOptimal dairy farm adjustments to increased utilization of corn distillers dried grains with solubles.
The purpose of this paper was to identify effective dairy farm management adjustments related to recent structural changes in agricultural commodity markets because of expanded biofuels production and other market factors. We developed a mathematical programming model of a representative dairy farm in New York State to estimate the effects of changes in the relative prices of important feed com...
متن کاملIntake of minerals, trace elements and vitamins in bone and raw food rations in adult dogs.
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the vitamin and mineral content of bone and raw food rations fed to adult dogs in Germany. Pet owners completed a standardised feeding questionnaire. The composition of 95 rations was calculated from mean data for foodstuffs using nutrition balancing software. Typical ration ingredients were meats, fish, offal, dairy products, eggs, oil, nuts, cod li...
